Abstract

To describe the epidemiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic profile of the oesophageal cancer through a monocentric study in the university hospital of Rabat, Morocco. It is a retrospective study of all patients with oesophageal cancer hospitalized in the Hepato gastro enterology Medecine B in the university hospital Ibn Sina in Rabat, between January 2005 and March 2015. The total number of patients was 31. The mean age was 60. The sex ratio was 26M/5F. Chronic smoking was found in 35% of the cases, and alcoholism in 13%. Gastro oesophageal reflux was noticed in 10% of the cases. 29% of our patients suffered from Barett’s oesophagus and 6% of peptic stenosis. Almost all of our patients were admitted for dysphagia, 10% of them had also upper digestive bleeding. The mean body mass index was 20 kg/m2. 25% of the patients had an anemia and 3% an inflammatory syndrome. The tumor concerned the lower third of the oesophagus in 74% and was stenosing in 58% of the cases. It was an epidermoid carcinoma in 60% of the cases and an adenocarcinoma in 40%. Metastasis were present for 48% of the patients. Only 19% had a curactiv surgery and 2 patients an oesophageal prosthesis. More adenocarcinomas are noticed. The age of diagnosis of oesophageal cancer is lowering. Early diagnosis is very rare, and curative options not often possible.
