Abstract

1981 was the Year of the Conferences in Canada. There were three important ones: the first in May as part of the Toronto Theatre Festival; the second, Canadian Theatre Today, organized by Tom Kerr and hosted by the University of Saskatchewan, in October; and the third, a critics’ conference at Queen’s University, later in October. The Toronto event consisted of three national and international colloquia: one on the problems facing Canadian theatre in general and university theatre programs in particular; another on theatre training, and the last on how to improve communication between critics around the world. All these conferences were concerned with the challenges involved in preparing for the theatre of the future. Altogether they generated much talk, some controversy and a few valuable insights.
