Abstract
In Canada, there is a great concern about technological accidents involving hazardous chemicals or oil products in the terrestrial or maritime environments. A few Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) have been built or are at the development stage to contribute to solve the problems related to this kind of accident. These KBS can be viewed as a new generation of tools that follow more classical software such as database management systems or decision support systems. These KBS have been developed to meet the needs of managers for training and/or response activities. They tend to be integrated to GIS and RDBMS tools. One, SHORECLEAN, is already a commercial product while HERMES is in search of potential partners from the private sector. SECOURS is a KBS project designed to train public health officials for toxic gas emergencies.
