Abstract

Relations between Canada and the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) countries — Commonwealth Caribbean — are well-established and centuries old. They originate in the years immediately following the American War of Independence, which resulted in the creation of the United States of America as an independent nation when the rejected colonial power, Great Britain, attempted to punish the new nation by excluding it from the lucrative West Indian trade. Imperial policy after 1788 essentially focused on the development of the remaining North American colonies under British control as a replacement for the Untied States as supplier of essential inputs to West Indian islands specialising in the production of sugar.1KeywordsPrime MinisterCocoa ButterInternational Criminal CourtFree Trade AgreementFree Trade AreaThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
