Abstract
Feminist theories of the transmission of sexual difference from one generation to the next have reached an impasse. This paper reflects on that impasse, focusing on the concepts of ‘transference’ and ‘repetition’ to show how the two concepts become confused without an account of language. Freud's discovery of the unconscious shows us humans to be divided. Lacan's account of the divided subject implies that there is always an element of failure in any attempt to heal this division. His work on the relation between language and jouissance offer pointers through the impasse.
