Abstract

Human resource development practices are important in the NHS due to complex dynamic work environments which include various sub-specialties, numerous stakeholders, and strong patient-centred influences that are inherent in the NHS. This article presents a number of techniques that can be employed to optimise the productivity and quality of multi-disciplinary team working using the cleft surgery service team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust as an example. This article reviews the importance of work-life balance, talent management and the psychological contract on employee motivation and performance. Human resource development practices which can optimise these facets are presented. This article suggests a number of techniques in which employees' ability to perform, motivation to perform, and opportunity to perform can be optimised in several NHS departments.
