Abstract

A LTHOUGH THE SPEECH of Citizens' Band (commonly abbreviated CB) radio operators has not been extensively studied by scholars, it is probably familiar to many readers and perhaps used by some. The widespread popularity of CBing and its considerable exposure in films, in popular songs, and in the news media have made the meanings of expressions like ten-four, good buddy, bear, and break intelligible to many non-CBers. There are literally dozens of popular books on CBing that treat CB speech (among them Brandonstiel 1976, Dills 1976, and Perkowski and Stral 1976). A number of works purport to be official dictionaries of CB lingo without any explanation of what makes them official.
