Abstract

Nursing research into math competency and the impact it has on success in nursing school has produced mixed results. This retrospective comparative study investigated whether math coursework predicted program completion in an associate degree nursing program. Review of student transcripts (n=473) found that how a student performed in calculus and precalculus courses, and a student’s overall total math GPA was associated with program completion. Grades in algebra & trigonometry or statistics courses had no effect on graduation rates.
