Abstract

After all our years of observation and research, why can we not seem to discover how to teach in a way that will give our world great leaders? If business school teachers and researchers could discover this one thing—what do we need to do to teach transformative leadership frames of mind to our students—wouldn’t it make a worthwhile difference? Short-term thinking in academia and accrediting agencies, with simplistic measurements of success, mitigate finding a solution. I observe leadership models that might be worth considering and recommend streams of research and scholarship that would help in finding answers for assessing long-term learning, tracking conduct of graduates, finding what leaders do to cultivate emotional resilience in the face of challenge and failure, and, importantly, finding ways to measure the deep learning that precedes becoming a superlative leader.
