Abstract

There can be little doubt that most nurses are more than capable of undertaking a wide range of the clinical skills more commonly associated with the work of doctors. Indeed, since the need to reduce junior doctors' hours was first raised (NHS Management Executive, 1991) there has been a proliferation of new roles for nurses, e.g. night nurse practitioners, cardiac assistants and surgical assistants.
