Abstract
Recently, superluminal velocities have been reported for the propagation of localized microwave pulses. A critical interpretation based on the analysis of plane and spherical waves shows that the superluminal effects are caused by interference phenomena. We demonstrate that Bessel beams or X-waves are unsuitable for superluminal signal transfer.
