Abstract
This chapter discusses the different meanings of the term “Campus Martius.” The said area, situated within the large bend of the Tiber, remained largely inhabited throughout the Middle Ages and up to modern times. As a result of continuous inhabitation, the grid of ancient streets and principal building blocks has remained largely intact. Several archaic sites and structures were found in the area. The oldest of the sanctuaries found in Campus Martius is the Temple of Apollo. The chapter narrates the activities of some of the ancient rulers of the land and how they influenced the building of structures in Campus Martius.
