The quality of care in the specialist unit for older people I worked in at Poole Hospital was fantastic - some of the most skilled nursing I have ever seen. You need an understanding of a diversity of medical conditions, multiple pathologies and social issues to work in this specialism, and as a professional it really stretches you.
