Abstract
In 1727 Friedrich Wilhelm I decreed that a chair for "Oeconomie, Policey und Kammer-Sachen" be established at the University of Halle; shortly after a further chair was founded at the University of Frankfurt on the Oder. This marked the beginning of the academic development of cameralism and Polizei as sciences to be taught to future state officials, and hence the formation of "Kameralund Polizeiwissenschaften."2 In the previous century a series of texts had appeared-among them Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff 's Teutscher Fuirsten-Stat (165-6), -Johann Becher's Politische Discurs (1668), and Wilhelm von Schr6der's Fiirstliche Schatzund Rentkammer (1686)which laid the basis for these new administrative sciences, but which were primarily addressed to the rulers of the Protestant states of the Holy Roman Empire.
