Abstract

The use of TLDs for the determination of gamma-heating effects in various materials, spanning a Z-number range of ∼4–82, has been assessed in the light of temperature measurements across specially designed experimental assemblies. A large planar 60Co source was employed for irradiation. The TLD-measured energy deposition rates were fed as input to a 3-D heat conduction code to obtain steady-state temperature drops across regions of low thermal conductivity in each assembly. These were compared with actual thermocouple measurements, agreement being generally within the experimental errors which were assessed as typically ±6% systematic and ±3% random.
