Abstract

The main difference with foundation trust status has been operating as a business, with local accountability. Foundation status suits the fact that The Royal Marsden has a different contribution to make to the NHS as a specialist provider. We have a powerful bench to bedside agenda for translating basic science from the Institute into improved care for patients in the Hospital. Before we became an NHS foundation trust, I was often asked why we did things differently. Now, no one asks why we trial new models of care or innovate technically.
