Abstract
Reference desks are standard features in general academic libraries, but are they staples in academic music libraries? The following study answers this question and also provides insight into the factors that have an effect on the existence of desks in these libraries. The study's survey indicated that two of these factors, library staffing practices and the reference service philosophy of music library staff members, had a meaningful impact on reference desks. The survey also found that there has been a resurgence of interest in establishing reference desks during the last decade, and that interest in continuing that trend was high.
