Abstract

This journal, Microbiology and Immunology, has a 50 year history since the publication of the first edition in 1957 of its predecessor, The Japanese Journal of Microbiology (Japan Bacteriological Society, Tokyo). Thirty years have passed since the journal became known as Microbiology and Immunology in 1977. During the journal's history there have been changes in the supporting societies, but in recent years sthe Japanese Society for Bacteriology, the Japanese Society for Virology and the Japanese Society for Host Defense Research have been supporting Microbiology and Immunology. In expectation of further development of the journal we have moved from the Center for Academic Publications Japan to Wiley-Blackwell and this issue is the first in our new publishing partnership. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to those who have contributed greatly to the development of this journal, particularly the ex-Editor-in-Chief, Professor Hidechika Okada. Science has evolved through repeated fragmentation and unification. Due to revolutionary developments in innate immunity, the field of microbiology and immunology is about to enter an age of integration and restructuring. In concert with this trend, the Federation of Microbiological Societies of Japan was established in February, 2007. The renewed Microbiology and Immunology will publish high-quality original articles and notes dealing with research advances in bacteriology, virology, immunology and related fields. We will also feature review and mini-review articles targeting broader audiences, not limited to researchers in these fields. Our new submissions system allows the submission and peer review of manuscripts online. Through our high quality publications, Microbiology and Immunology will provide a forum for the exchange of information about new and significant research in microbiology and related fields, and promote the discipline of microbiology throughout the world. We look forward to receiving many submissions to the renewed Microbiology and Immunology.
