Abstract

A bill that would have sanctioned overdose prevention programs (OPPs)—the term used in the bill for “safe injection sites” where people could use illegal drugs and health care workers would stand by to rescue them from overdoses—was vetoed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom last week. The governor said it could have resulted in a “world of unintended consequences.” The bill would have allowed for pilot OPPs for five years.
