Abstract

Events in California for the year 1895 point to a strong sympathy among the voters of the state for free coinage of silver, at 16 to i. In the years prior to 1895 whenever the silver question was the subject of debate in Congress, Californians responded with pamphlets and editorials, generally in support of silver. During the debates of 1877-78 and 1885-86 the Democratic Representatives and Senators from California always voted for free silver; the Republicans divided, those from the agrarian areas voting for and those from the cities of the Bay region voting against free silver, except in one conspicuous
