Abstract

In this paper, we attempt to optimize the parameters related to estuarine salt intrusion in Delft3D model. BOBYQA algorithm by Powell, a constrained optimization algorithm was applied to the ?? ?? model of Delft3D to calibrate the vertical salinity profiles. The optimization was first demonstrated with the flume data of Ippen and Harleman (1961), then was applied to the observation data of the Seomjin River in Korea. A total of 11 or 15 parameters were optimized with the objective function of salinity RMS error. The observation data were totally 28 sets of the vertical salinity distribution at 14 different stations, obtained by Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology. The results showed that the turbulence generation and viscous dissipation terms, and turbulent Prandtl number were relatively more important among the parameters employed in the optimization. It could also be assured that the accuracy of the vertical salinity profile was much improved through the optimization.
