Abstract

In 1938, Keifer erected the genus Calepitrimerus, which includes Epitrimerus vitis Nalepa. In 1942, he described deuterogyny in which the overwintering generation consists of only females which are morphologically different from the summer females or protogynes. Deuterogyny was found in phyllocoptine species on deciduous trees and shrubs. Later Keifer (1952) offered the interpretation that Phyllocoptes vitis Nalepa was possibly the deutogyne of Calepitrimerus vitis (= E. vitis). He also listed the possible type locality of P. vitis as Austria. Müller-Thurgau (1906) had stated, however, that he collected in Switzerland eriophyid mites which, over a period beginning in 1903, he and others cited had associated with vine abnormalities. He further stated that he forwarded specimens to A. Nalepa in Vienna who, he added, described the species as P. vitis, n. sp.
