Abstract

Terms of P1,3 and S1,3 Rydberg series of Be are calculated up to n = 10. An effective Hamiltonian which contains two-electron operators for the core electrons is used. Trial Rydberg functions are used in a linear variation method, and the functions are optimized with respect to orbital exponents. The agreement with experimental term values is very encouraging. Penetration and exchange energies are calculated independently from the final Rydberg functions and are discussed for the different series.
