Abstract

Equilibrium distortions of nuclei in the rare-earth region are calculated on the basis of a modified oscillator model. In particular quadrupole ( P 2), hexadecapole ( P 4) and hexakon-tatettarapole ( P 6) deformations are considered. The effect, on especially P 4 distortions, of taking into account the coupling of the P 4 term to different numbers of oscillator shells, is studied. The equilibrium distortions are also calculated when the average behavior of the energy surface is normalized to that of a liquid drop according to the method developed by Strutinsky.
