Abstract

A re-arrangement of the Mie series has been used to calculate the extinction and scattering of radiation by a dispersed phase of carbon particles small with respect to the wavelength. The results compare with those obtained directly from the Mie series and are in general agreement with reported experimental values of extinction. This simple method is generally applicable to small particles of absorbing materials.
