Abstract

During the layout of dynamically loaded parts in mechanical engineering the designer has to choose many safety factors to cover uncertainties. Despite the fact that the external load is mostly well-known, one of the main unknown input values is the overall load because of unknown residual stress state. Especially tensile residual stresses can decrease the load capacity and the component lifetime, considerably. Beyond validating the modeling approach, a series of calculations is discussed to show the effect of weld pattern as well as tack welds on the final residual stress state. With such a tool it is possible to get a better insight in the development of welding residual stresses, and therefore one can propose an optimal weld sequence to minimize residual tensile stresses at a certain location along the weld seam in the structure.
