Abstract

An expansion of the perturbed atomic state wavefunction in terms of R-matrix states is used to calculate the dynamic dipole polarizability alpha ( omega ) of the ground 1S state of the beryllium atom and the ground 3P state of the carbon atom. The effect of including configuration interaction in both the ground and perturbed state wavefunctions is studied. The corresponding Van der Waals C6 coefficients of the long-range interaction between two ground state beryllium atoms and between two ground state carbon atoms, are also calculated.
