Abstract

A model is proposed allowing the a priori calculation of the lowering Δ T of the glass transition temperature (or equivalently the minimum film formation temperature MFFT) of latex particles on the addition of coalescing agents. Inversely the model allows the calculation of the volume (or weight) fraction of coalescing agent to be added to a latex in order to lower its MFFT by Δ T. The model is based on the free volume concept and the knowledge of the distribution coefficient of the coalescent representing the distribution between the polymer particles and the aqueous phase. The model also works well when applied to mixtures of coalescing agents.
