Abstract

Site measurements and collection of rainfall and runoff data will provide an earth science student with the necessary information to calculate stream discharges and approximate rates of erosion within a small drainage basin. Drainage ditches (gullys) associated with shopping center parking lots can provide a readily accessible area to monitor. The area of the drainage basin (the parking lot) must be carefully measured. Discharge is determined from the amount of rainfall/time within the drainage basin. The volume of material eroded and the rate of erosion can be obtained from cross-section measurements of the gully made before and after a storm. Measurements at several sites will provide students with a direct feeling for the effect of: 1) drainage basin size, 2) amount and intensity of rainfall, 3) type and amount of vegetation, 4) soil differences, and 5) the effect of human activity.
