Abstract

Measurements on CaF/sub 2):Tm IH are reported, and measurements on Ca/F/ sub 2/:Yb lV are included for comparison. The crystals were x irradiated at 77 deg K and the ESR spectrum investigated without allowing the crystals to warm up. The spectrum is assigned to Tm/sup 169/ III which is isoelectronic with Yb IV (4f/ sup 13/sup 2/F/sup 7/2/). This result shows that the electrons were captured by Tm IV ions which must have been initially on cubic sites. Tm III ions were also observed after irradiation at room temperature with ionizing radiations and do not begin to decay rapidly until heated to about 550 deg C. The g value of Yb lV was measured at the X and K bands in the cubic field of CaF/sub 2/, and it was found that g = 3.443 plus or minus 0.002. The ground configuration of Tm IH and Yb IV consists of a single hole in a full 4f shell and only two terms /sup 2/ F/sub 5/2/ and /sup 2/F sub 7/2/ occur, with the latter lower. Discussion is given on the significance of the results. (P.C.H.)
