Abstract
A new analytical method for determining passive earth pressure against rigid retaining walls considering the arching effect under translational mode in horizontal cohesionless soil is proposed. The calculation formula of failure angle of sliding surface is obtained that can take the influence of wall-soil friction angle into account. The circular major principal stress trajectory is simplified to a straight line, and the differential thin-layer element is divided along the direction of this approximate tilted linear principal stress trajectory to improve the horizontal flat-element method. Application of the proposed method to three existing tests achieves satisfactory results compared with the measurements.
