Abstract

Two methods for the calculation of orbital moments are discussed. In particular previous calculations for YCo 5 with the recursion method are compared to a new linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation (LMTO-ASA) calculation. The magnetic properties of YCo 5 are discussed with emphasis on contributions of the different cobalt atom sites (3 g and 2 c). The effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy is discussed. The orbital moment contribution is calculated for CaCuO 2, the parent of the new superconducting cuprates.
