Abstract

The nuclear level density \ensuremath{\rho}(U,I) is derived from an equation of state, without reference to the Fermi gas model. If the yrast line backbends, then the effective level density parameter ${a}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ must be spin dependent at low temperatures. The spin dependent components of ${a}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ renormalize the spin cutoff factor \ensuremath{\sigma}.
