Abstract

Hoek, Bray and Boyd (1973) have given an analytical procedure to calculate the factor of safety for the case of potential sliding along the line of intersection of the two supporting planes for a three-dimensional wedge having two free surfaces. In this paper, this analytical procedure is extended to obtain expressions to calculate minimum rock bolt force and minimum static acceleration to achieve required factor of safety for the same type of wedge stability. The effects of an obliquely inclined upper slope face, a tension crack behind the slope face, water pressure within the tension crack and on the two supporting planes and any other known external forces can be included in the analysis. Resistance to sliding results from both friction and cohesion on the two supporting surfaces. Examples are given to illustrate the use of derived expressions.
