Abstract

Values of vertical incidence HF absorption calculated using the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) are compared with published values obtained using the A1 technique. It is found that the IRI overestimates the absorption under most conditions, especially near the geomagnetic equator. The causes of the discrepancies are discussed, and required changes to the IRI E-region N( h) profile indicated.
