Abstract

A ``maximum electromechanically useful energy product'' (MEP) is proposed as a basis for comparisons among magnet materials for use in electrical motors and generators. This parameter accomodates effects of the operating permeance coefficient and the shape of the electromagnetic field generated by the machine, and relates directly to the maximum machine torque obtainable from a unit volume of the magnet material. A method is presented for approximate calculation of MEP from conventional data for Alnico magnet materials.
