Abstract

An application of the equivalent strain energy density method for calculation of elastic-plastic notch-tip strains in circumferential notches under torsion is presented. The mathematical formulation of the method is presented together with its numerical interpretations. Finally, the calculated notch-tip strains are compared with the finite element data obtained for several materials and notches. Included are also results obtained from Neuber's rule. Good notch-tip strain predictions based on the equivalent strain energy density concept were achieved for sharp and blunt notches.
