Abstract
An accurate and simple method of calculating the cutoff frequencies in single mode fibres having arbitrary refractive index profiles is presented. A Chebyshev power-series approach is used here and this method is fast to get good accuracy with only a small number of terms. The computational procedure presented is simple enough to be accomplished on a microcomputer. By knowing the accurate cutoff frequency, one can determine the diameter of the core with the available optical source. In the present paper, three different profiles (general power-law profile, step-index with centre dip and parabolic profile with an axial gaussian dip) are considered and this approach can be used for any arbitrary profile and experimental profile data.
