Abstract

The relativistic and non-relativistic plane wave Born approximation is used to calculate the total electron impact ionization cross-section of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe. The wavefunctions of the atom and residual ions are calculated with allowance for relaxation effects. The one-electron wavefunction of the continuous spectrum for the ejected electron is obtained by using the Dirac–Fock method. The role of the relativistic, exchange, orthogonalization and relaxation effects are investigated. Results of calculations are compared to available experimental measurements and theoretical calculations performed by other methods. In particular, we presented the results of our nonrelativistic distorted Born approximation calculations.
