Abstract

This paper analyzes the magnetic lead screw (MLS) from the perspective of the airgap field harmonics for the accurate and fast parametric analysis and the performance test. According to the Maxwell stress tensor, formulas of calculating thrust force and torque can be given. Based on the method of the finite element analysis and the analytic calculation, the flux density distribution is analyzed. The impact of the "end effect" should be considered in the calculation of the thrust force of the MLS. The analytical results agree very well with the FEA results and the difference between the both is less than 1%. The torque and thrust force of the MLS are contributed by several dominating field harmonics. Quantitative comparisons are made for the parametric analysis of the MLS which assist to verify and complement existing conclusions.
