Abstract

A simple jellium model is constructed in order to obtain one-electron wave functions for the valence electrons of the fullerene. With this jellium wave function we have calculated ionization cross sections for proton-C60+ collisions in the semiclassical approximation. For higher projectile velocities, for which the semiclassical approximation is valid also for electron impact, theoretical cross sections fit satisfactorily the experimental data of Volpel et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.71 (1993) 3439].
