Abstract

The spatial distributions of helium atomic and molecular ions in the negative glow are calculated assuming that both ions diffuse away from the cathode, that atomic ions are simultaneously being converted to molecular ions, and that both ions are being destroyed by recombination. Different assumptions are made relating the charge distributions to the intensity distributions with the result that a consistent diffusion—collisional—radiative recombination model best satisfies the experimental observations.
