Abstract

All of the patients (excepting one subclinical case) were found to be in abnormally negative calcium balance and the tracer studies showed this to be due to an excessive endogenous fecal calcium loss, whereas the true calcium absorption was normal. While radiographs showed phalangeal erosions in only one, and the serum alkaline phosphatase was raised in only two patients, the serum vitamin D levels were subnormal and the tracer revealed a high bone uptake of Ca-47 in all cases. Also, the simple strontium space measurement and calcium infusion test showed abnormally hlgh skeletal avidity in most cases.
