Abstract

ABSTRACT Strong emission lines of the Ca II infrared triplet have been observed in the cataclysmic variable stars YZ Cnc, T Leo, X Leo, and TW Vir and were not detected in BT Mon. The Ca II lines are emitted from the outer regions of the accretion disk and thus offer an alternative to the H I lines to measure Vd sin i for the disk itself. Contemporaneous blue spectra are also discussed. Fe II lines from multiplet 42 are notable in each star except BT Mon; they have profiles and peak separations slightly wider than those of the Ca II lines. The O I λ8446 line was detected in YZ Cnc, T Leo, and TW Vir. Calcium infrared triplet emission represents another point of contact between accretion disks in cataclysmic variables and active galactic nuclei. In each case they probe the cool and neutral outer regions of the disks.
