Abstract

Summary The releases of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and of human placental lactogen (hPL) by explants from normal term placentae were both stimulated by calcium, barium, ionomycin, and forskolin. The stimulatory effect of calcium could be thwarted by cobalt, a calcium influx blocker. These results are consistent with the view that an increased calcium inflow provokes the secretion of both hCG and hPL from human placental explants.
