Abstract
Plasma calcium and magnesium levels were measured in 341 pregnant and 15 non-pregnant women in different trimesters of pregnancy and also in 89 pairs of cord and maternal samples. Of the pregnant women 57 were suffering from mild or severe pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and 37 were eclamptics. Plasma calcium and magnesium levels showed a decrease from a non-pregnant levels of 9.3±0.27 and 2.3±0.26 mg/dl to 8.7±0.67 and 2.1±0.27 mg/dl at term respectively. In PIH and eclampsia plasma calcium and magnesium levels were significantly lower as compared to the levels in normal pregnant women of similar gestational age. Though close correlations were found between maternal and cord blood plasma levels of calcium and magnesium, the analysis of data with respect to birth weight did not show any significant differences among the different groups. Thus the low plasma calcium and magnesium levels in Indian women indicate low bone mass. No cause and effect relationship could be established between the disease process of eclampsia and the plasma levels of these minerals.
