Abstract

Calcifying odontogenic cyst is a rare developmental odontogenic cyst and member of a group of ghost cell lesions of the jaw. We report a case of a 60-year-old man referred to the service with the main complaint of a painful swelling in the alveolar crest of the right mandibular body, with 4 years of evolution. Intraoral examination showed an increase in volume of rigid consistency and normal color. A well-defined unilocular radiolucency was observed in orthopantomography. Aspiration with 22-gauge needle revealed yellowish fluid content. Enucleation of the cyst was performed under local anesthesia. Histopathologic examination revealed a fragment of cystic lesion with a fibrous capsule lined by a variable-thickness epithelium with a well-defined basal layer of palisading columnar cells exhibiting focal accumulations of ghost cells with luminal projections, leading to the diagnosis of calcifying odontogenic cyst. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient is in follow-up.
