Abstract
Abstract Calcareous nannoplankton from Haumurian to Waipawan strata in Mid-Waipara section indicate three distinctive biostratigraphic zones similar to those across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in Europe and North America. The lowest zone (uppermost Haumurian) contains Deflandrius cretaceus ?, Kamptnerius magnificus, Nephrolithus barbarae, and other species diagnostic of the Upper Cretaceous. The middle zone (Lower to Middle Teurian) lacks species diagnostic of the Cretaceous and contains only species which have Danian affinities. It is divided into two subzones: the lower subzone is marked by the entry of Coccolithus danicus and Zygolithus concinnus, and the upper subzone by the entry of Coccolithus bisulcus. The highest zone recognised (lowermost Waipawan) is correlated with the Upper Paleocene Discoaster multiradiatus zone of Bramlette and Sullivan.
