Matthew Limb explains how a comment from the UK chief vet has left some vets up in arms. UK chief vet Nigel Gibbens has defended the use of colony hen cages to ward against avian influenza after being accused by some vets of showing ‘brazen endorsement’ for caging. Battery cages for chickens were banned in 2012 by the EU, which ruled that if laying hens were to be held they must be in bigger, enriched or colony cages instead.
