Abstract
The present study is aimed to investigate the effect of Cadmium (Cd) on mitotic index (MI) and DNA damage of Vigna unguiculata. The seedlings were exposed to 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mM concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) for 15 days. The drastic reduction in MI was observed due to Cd toxicity because the mitotic divisions had been with holding when the Cd stress increases. Cd-induced genotoxicity was measured through comet assay. This suggests that increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under Cd toxicity serves as a major source of DNA damage leading to strand breakage, removal of nucleotides and variety of modifications in organic bases of nucleotides.
